The online world is a very different place for gamers than it once was. The era of Halo 2, Halo 3, Gears of War, Ghost Recon and Call of Duty 4 was something special.. A cornerstone of online gaming history. And in a time before the KEEMSTARS, The FazE’s, The OpTics, or even competitive console esports there was few people with more gaming FAME than KSI SE7EN 7, or Billy “NATAS” Roach. The 1st Chief Executive Officer (and later Chairman) of KSI Global Gaming Network (Knowledge Strength Integrity) – The times before even Xbox Live Party Chats, all your friends having to hop on the mic after school in a Halo 3 pre-game lobby just to talk. The early days of Xbox Live and gaming clans was truly an experience you just had to be there to understand. It is up to us, and those for the generations that come before as Clan Scene Historians to share the knowledge and lessons of the past.
I got the pleasure of communicating with my once Clan leader, and Legend of the Clan Scene Billy Roach aka KSI SE7EN 7 or the old heads call him NATAS. And decided to ask him just SEVEN questions for our blog. He was more than happy to help out the project and said he hopes it helps with the views. And WE AGREE!.
Here Are The 7 Questions I Had For KSI SE7EN 7.
I. What is a clan to you? What good do clans do for the gaming world?
Clan is a world that really to me means gaming community or place for friends to gather and compete in online E sports. A clan is about fellowship and brotherhood where lasting life time friendships and bonds are built.
II. As a clan leader, what is the hardest lesson you learnt?
That sometimes you will lose friends based on trending different beliefs that will pass but the hard words used at the time leave no room for forgiveness.
III. Leaders often say the ride is the best part, what’s the best memory you have from leading KSI?
The ride for me was a roller coaster of emotions where some of my choices would split friends. My favorite memories are so many but I really enjoyed all of the websites we built and being able to go to e sport events and hang out with my members.
IV. Break-off clans occur, what are your thoughts on break-off clans? Is there a morally correct way of saying “I’m just doing my own things”
There really is a correct way that would happen here and there. I had a few great leaders come to me in private and tell me just that and we worked and gave our all to make the split seamless without anger. Many times they came back and was a better leader and well respected.
V. What are 5 words that describe the clan scene.
Competitive, Exciting, Intelligent, Community, Aggressive.
VI. Would you ever return to Clans? Will life ever allow it?
I would love to but am unsure sure that we could ever recreate something so amazing. It was just a time in space none of us realized when it all started to hit hard. We really pioneered a world of esports, community, and a standard for gamers around the world.
VII. If a new clan leader is reading this, one who wasn’t around way back when, what would you say to them?
Build it and they will come.
Don’t ever give up no matter how hard it seems keep building for gamers and by gamers!
